Angus Johnson’s free Resource Hacker is meant for experienced users, programmers and developers who regularly work with executable files and need an efficient tool to access resources stored within executable files. You see, Resource Hacker can perform the following tasks: view resources stored in executable and resources files (EXE, DLL, CPL, OCX, RES); extract resources; rename and replace resources; add new resources; delete resources.

Icons, bitmaps, cursors, menus, dialogs, version info and other resources can be viewed, extracted and saved locally, renamed and replaced, added to, or deleted. It must be mentioned here that Resource Hacker incorporates an internal resource script compiler and decompiler.

Download an installer, run it, and a setup wizard will show up; said setup wizard will guide you through the installation process. These are the standard steps for installing an application on a Windows PC. They’re also the steps you must go through to install Resource Hacker on your Windows PC.

When the setup wizard is done with the installation, it will ask to open a Read Me text file. Said file explains that Resource Hacker is a freeware utility and quickly goes over the main bits of functionality Resource Hacker has to offer. Alongside this useful Read Me there’s a handy Help file. It presents the functionality Resource Hacker has to offer in more depth.

Angus Johnson’s Resource Hacker, as mentioned above, is a freeware utility. Please note that Resource Hacker is not to be used in any way to illegally modify software.

Resource Hacker checks all the right boxes: it’s free, it has an easy to use interface, it is a useful utility for viewing and editing resources in Windows executable files.

Pros

A simple setup wizard will help you install Resource Hacker on your Windows PC. Resource Hacker’s functionality is presented in a Read Me text file and in a more detailed Help file. Resource Hacker has an easy to use, simple interface. Use Resource Hacker to access and edit resources stored in executable files. Resource Hacker incorporates an internal resource script compiler and decompiler. Resource Hacker is free software.

Cons

None that I could think of.
